Hi pals! Welcome back to the blog! Today I am sharing with you a Cordsmith tutorial on how to make a braided I-cord strap for bags, totes, belts, and more!
You will need a Cordsmith Original or a Cordsmith mini if you want to do this the way I am showing you, but if you’d prefer to knit a ton of I-cord manually, well, who am I to stop you?

But Sam, what is a Cordsmith?
Well, it’s a magical tool that lets you knit I-cord with easy and oh so quickly. They are made by my sweet friend Autumn, and is a 3d printed handle with 3 latch hooks all put together in her special way, and BAM! Cordsmith. There is way more that goes into that, but from my silly perspective, she’s a wizard and it just happens. :)
I have a tutorial for how to use one here, or you can keep reading and watch my new video below, which also shows you all of those steps plus a few more! :)
So let’s get onto what this post is really about, the Cordsmith Braided Strap Tutorial.
First, you need to knit up 3 different I-cords, about 10 inches or so longer than the length you want the strap to be. I made mine about 55-60 inches long, and my strap ended up being about 42 inches long, a little more when stretched. You can make yours as long as you want of course, this is just a recommendation for what I did.
But instead of just walking you through it all without showing you, let’s hop into the video and I can really get into the details with you. (TLDW; I show you how to cast on, work your cords, bind off, and braid them together.)
Okay, and that is the Cordsmith Braided Strap Tutorial! If you have any questions, feel free to leave those below!
Xx,
Sam
