This book follows Nell Young, a wildly talented cartographer, through an incredibly public scandal that resulted in her losing her job and the community she was so in love with, but the fact that it was her father that had caused it was the kicker. Fast forward 7 years and her father is suddenly found murdered in his office at the New York City Library and its up to Nell to figure out why.
To start out, I really wasn’t sure of this book at first. I tend to lean more into a different type of genera, and although there is magic in this book, it is much different than the magic/fantasy books I have read in the past. And to be frank, this book was more about the story behind the magic more than the magic itself.
As you walk with Nell through a series of twists and turns, I found myself quickly unraveling the main plot about a third of the way into the book. I will say however, the writer is incredibly good at writing in my eyes, because regardless of how much I thought I knew, she knew more and almost always knew when to drop something onto the reader. And realistically, if you don’t overanalyze it, it’s a really really solid adventure. I loved the MC, I understood her determination and willpower to prove herself, and there were a few bombs that I just wasn’t expecting, so I do really have to hand it to Peng. There are some things I would have rearranged so I might not have figured it out so quickly, but I could also just be reading way too many of the same type of book and I’m just a professional plot guesser now. :)
Am I happy I read it? Actually, yes. I would recommend this book if you are into found family, slow burns, or murder mystery-esque stories.
